Opera has announced to shut down its mobile VPN app for Android and iOS by the end of this month.
“We’re discontinuing the Opera VPN app for iOS and Android on April 30, 2018. But don’t worry. We’re helping to make sure your privacy is still looked after,” an announcement on Opera’s official website read.
The company did not cite a clear reason for the move.
Opera is currently offering Opera Gold users an option to redeem a free one-year subscription to SurfEasy Ultra VPN, which regularly available for $11.99 a month and offers “unlimited usage on up to five devices, access to 28 regions, and a strict no-log policy.”
The users of free version of Opera VPN can get 80 percent off SurfEasy Total VPN, which normally costs $4.99 a month
The SurfEasy Ultra offers more features than free SurfEasy plan such as unlimited data (compared to 500MB), torrent protection for desktop computers, ad tracker blocking and support for a dozen more countries for connection routing.
The users of free version of Opera VPN can get 80 percent off SurfEasy Total VPN, which normally costs $4.99 a month.
SurfEasy, which was founded in 2011 and acquired by Opera back in March 2015, is currently available on Amazon, Android, Mac, Windows and iOS platforms.
“SurfEasy consistently hits 99.9% uptime both globally and regionally for all of its users, has a unique ad tracker/blocker, and most importantly does not log browsing or downloading activity like some other VPNs,” the company further wrote.
A ‘world-class’ customer support is also there for SurfEast users, according to the company.
“All of us here at Opera VPN (including Olaf) are sincerely grateful for all your support over the last couple of years, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
“We know you’ll be happy at SurfEasy, and we know SurfEasy will work hard to look after your online privacy,” the announcement read.
A few months back, Opera had also shut down its data-saving app, Opera Max, again without giving a good reason.
While Opera VPN is set to be killed off, there are a number of other VPN alternatives available for both Android and iOS platforms, with ExpessVPN, IPVanish, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited and Private Internet Access VPN being some of them.
